Cybersecurity Training Pathway

A practical pathway for school IT teams to meet RPA, DfE Digital Standards, and Cyber Essentials expectations through structured training and development.

1. Core Awareness (All IT Staff) Every member of the IT team should have a baseline understanding of cyber hygiene and the school's responsibilities: NCSC “Top Tips for Staff” - free, short e-learning covering essential behaviours. Cyber Essentials Readiness Toolkit - helps identify gaps and introduce the Cyber Essentials framework. 2. Cybersecurity Responsibilities (Technicians & Managers) Staff with responsibility for maintaining systems need deeper knowledge and skills: NCSC Certified Training Directory - short, role-appropriate admin/ops courses. Microsoft Learn security pathways - free modules for M365/Azure environments (identity, access, Defender, incident response). Commercial providers (e.g. SANS) - more advanced training where budgets allow. 3. Incident Response (Designated Leads / Senior Roles) Those with incident response responsibility should practise and lead on resilience: NCSC “Exercise in a Box” - run simulated scenarios such as ransomware or phishing to test readiness. Formal IR training (e.g. CREST-aligned courses) - covering escalation, communication, and recovery.…
